Golden Gate Bridge open to cars, closed to pedestrians

The Golden Gate Bridge was open to cars Tuesday, but not pedestrians, following Tuesday morning's air attack on the Pentagon and World Trade Centers.

But security forces continued patrolling San Francisco's famous span until further notice. San Francisco Police Department, California Highway Patrol and bridge security officers were guarding the bridge in large numbers.

"We have more heightened controls, " said bridge spokesperson Mary Currie. "The sidewalks are closed as precautionary measures."

Traffic on the Golden Gate bridge, Bay Bridge and other Bay Area spans was snarled Tuesday morning, causing major delays.
